In 1996, a group of citizens interested in promoting and cultivating international relations with a city in Africa met under the leadership of Ms. Virgina Haywood-Smith. Out of this interest, the African Sister Cities Committee - Toledo Sister Cities International was formed. In 1999, after researching and exploring a number of possible sister cities, the committee decided to pursue a sister cities relationship with Tanga, Tanzania.
Tanga is located in East Africa. Like Toledo, Tanga is a seaport and the population of the two cities is also about the same. In 2001, the sister cities agreement was signed by Tanga Mayor Salim Kassim Kisauji and then Toledo Mayor Carleton Finkeiner. (TSCI)
